Run Number 1281 The Works, Sowerby Bridge, 4th March 2007 Hares: Stappadictomy and Wheels A bleary eyed and ?slightly? hung-over pack gathered on the forecourt of The Works still trying to remember what had transpired the night before at THE BIG HAWAIAN BIRTHDAY PARTY : celebrating 50 years on this planet for Stappadictome and a few more years for Longhose and Lick-It-Up (who share 2nd March birthdays). Full Moon Celebrations and Blind Folded Three Legged Races went well into the night Those of us who had crashed in the pub (LIU still with a smile on her face) had also partaken of an excellent Full English Breakfast, not the best preparation for an athletic event. The sky was overcast, but it looked as if it would stay dry (or so LIU thought having donned a T-shirt in contrast to most of the pack who looked dressed for winter). The pack crossed the road and immediately found themselves climbing vertically – at which point the drizzle started. About halfway up the mountain a split directed short-cutters along the road and the rest up yet another vertical path – but respite was at hand in the form a Rum Stop – kindly provided by Stappadictome in further birthday celebration. Foot-in-Crutch had somehow managed to follow a parallel path up the mountainside 200 meters away but tantalisingly out of reach of the rum. By this time an icy steady rain was falling. We continued up to the moor top and progressed along the ridge – now half an arctic gale beating our backs. Shaggy Plug showed quite remarkable chivalry for a Hasher – offering the now frozen Lick-It Up his outer, waterproof jacket – what relief!! Having progressed along the moortop the trail then dropped sharply downhill to regain the road and great relief as the beer stop was a The Hobbit – this pub being only about 50 yards from where we had left the road in the first place! Matilda and Sweetbreads played at Juggling The Inflatable Sheep and Little World continued to proudly sport his Plastic Boobs. Here we discovered they hold Mystery Evenings and one such was due soon – plans were made for a Hash social overnight stay – sadly later scuppered by the fact that the barman was misinformed and the event was already fully booked. After the welcome chance to warm up (not to mention the odd dose of alcohol) the trail continued downhill to upper Sowerby Bridge where Shaggy, Easy Access, Henry Root, Stappadictome and Lick-It-Up decided upon another impromptu beer stop at the Stirk Inn. Here we engaged in conversation with the young landlord and landlady – recent incumbents working at building up business. We promised to return soon with the full Hash compliment (a promise realised six weeks later on Run 1287 on 15th April) Back to the Works where we found that the staff had done a remarkably efficient job of clearing up from our party the night before and laid on a splendid spread. Down Downs went to the Hares, Stappadictome and Wheels, to the Birthday Girl and Boys Lick-It-Up, Stappadictome and Longhose, to Japansese Takuya looking for sponsorship for his forthcoming challenge of a cycle ride to Rotterdam followed by the Rotterdam Marathon, to Mimi and partner visitors from Scotland, Boghopper, Doolittle and Talking Pussy from Scarborough, Wetnix and to the landlord and landlady who had gone way beyond the call of duty in giving us a fantastic weekend despite expectations of tiny feet in a few months time.
