RUN No 1239 – SUN INN, THORNTON, BRADFORD.
19th June 2006.
Hares Lick It Up and Yannick. The FAITH, HOPE and CHARITY Run – or A BULL (or MOLE)(or LLAMA) of a RUN
Research (i.e. a chat over a few beers) for this venue, located next door to Yannick’s house, revealed that our landlord, Dave, has run with Jeddah Hash and is therefore well acquainted with Hash peculiarities. The pack gathered slowly at this new venue on a fine summers evening, and were introduced to Yannick, Lick It Up’s second Virgin co-Hare of the year, and CHARITY, her shattered hound who had “helped” lay the trail by consuming vast quantities of flour en route – hence the FAITH & HOPE that any flour would be found on trail. The introduction included advice that back arrows (as per Harrogate H3) would be found on this trail. This news did not go down well; in Matilda’s word: “Yorkshire don’t do back arrows”. Unlike her slightly more “Senior” co-hares, Charity was too tired to repeat the run, which set off through a gate opposite the Inn to traverse a couple of fields before the entire pack bought the falsie and progressed along the obvious path instead of alongside the cricket pitch to cross the main road and progress down the hill, commanding splendid views down the valley, and into the cemetery, where many of the headstones have delightful carvings of the occupants interests in life, fishing, walking, animals etc. Stick in his inimitable way headed downhill, the main pack were sent purposelessly to the top of the cemetery whilst the Hares advised the back markers that progress along the middle path would bring them to the exit. Again a tidy few hared off down the hill whereas the true trail headed up the lane and diagonally across a series of fields, where Easy Access petted a sweet furry little MOLE, and then into rough vegetation down to Denholme Clough with Hash Views first over Doe Park Reservoir and then of a sadly dilapidated garden swimming pool decorated with animal sculptures. Most of the pack flowed Pint’s lead along the walled path until called back to take the path that wound it’s way along Denholme Beck, under a disused railway bridge (BADO)(Back Arrow Disgracefully Obliterated) and then sharply left up a rough grass slope for further views of Doe Park Reservoir. The trail then dropped down to the head of the reservoir, crossed duck-board planks where Tightfit helped LIU to look for her specs, lost some years before whilst they both run the Yorkshireman Off-Road Marathon. More flour deception sent a goodly number towards some crags instead of through the small wood. Perhaps they were trying to avoid the BULL marshalling his HAREM in the next field to be crossed before the trail headed down the lane to “Moscow” and thence along walled paths past the LLAMA Farm and back to the Inn. The Circle was held on the back terrace commanding more fabulous sunset views over the vale. Down Downs went to the Hares, Pints, Everready (for some convoluted tale (about Jeddah I presume) and our hosts Dave (proudly sporting his Jeddah T-Shirt) & Pam for their welcome and the delicious offerings of chips, sausages and sarnies.
